Sanctity of Life
“The care of human life and happiness and not their destruction is the first and only legitimate object of good government.” Thomas Jefferson
Human life is precious in all it’s dimensions, from conception to natural death. We have a moral obligation to step up, to speak out and to defend the right to life – for the unborn, the disabled, the helpless, the elderly and those that are the least among us.
From the moment of conception, a new person is created, unique in their DNA, with the blueprint for their own blood type, their hair color, eye color, gender and even the pattern for their individual fingerprints. Within days, a tiny heart is beating. Within a few weeks, whorls, loops and arcs appear on miniature fingers – fingerprints shared with no one else in the world. This is undeniably life.
Mother Teresa spoke at the National Prayer breakfast in 1994. The entire theme of her talk was abortion. She said in part:
“America needs no words from me to see how your decision in Roe v. Wade has deformed a great nation. The so-called right to abortion has pitted mothers against their children and women against men. It has sown violence and discord at the heart of the most intimate human relationships. It has portrayed the greatest of gifts — a child — as a competitor, an intrusion, and an inconvenience.
Human rights are not a privilege conferred by government. They are every human being’s entitlement by virtue of his humanity. The right to life does not depend, and must not be declared to be contingent, on the pleasure of anyone else, not even a parent or a sovereign.”
Since Roe v Wade became law in 1973, over 52 million babies have been denied that most basic of all human rights – the right to life. We will never know if one of them would have been the next Albert Einstein, or the next Michelangelo, or maybe just the really great guy who lives down the street.
I am opposed to abortion. I am opposed to federal funds being used for abortion at home or abroad. I am opposed to embryonic stem cell research. The right to life is a sacred trust I will guard as a US Senator.
